In a nod to the lengthy medical device design cycle, Molex Inc., Lisle, Ill., this week announced plans to provide replacement and technical support for up to 10 years on a select series of its micro interconnection products aimed at mobile and portable medical applications. The company produces a range of micro-scale fine-pitch connectors to support medical device designers and manufacturers.

Molex interconnection systems

In addition to micro interconnection systems, Molex makes interconnect solutions for markets such as data communications, telecommunications, consumer electronics, industrial, automotive, medical, military, lighting and solar.

"Our micro connector series now carries a powerful commitment of ongoing product availability and support to help deliver smooth launches and long product life cycles for medical devices and equipment," said Anthony Kalaijakis, the strategic medical market manager at Molex.

The company's core interconnections products include:

  • SlimStack, a 0.40mm-pitch, board-to-board system said to save about 25 percent of the space required by similar products.
  • IllumiMate, a 2.00mm wire-to-board system reportedly featuring the narrowest width of any similar low-power connector systems.
  • FPC, a 0.30mm-pitch, dual-contact connector offering a short length and secure FPC retention while eliminating the need to source a top- and bottom-style connector when routing an FPC to parallel boards.
  • MicroSD, an ultra-small 1.28mm-tall memory card connector said to reduce memory card fly-out and sticking problems in portable devices such as mobile phones.
